A beautiful way to spend each dinner or after-dinner with the family is to slow down and read poetry together. See it as a chance for quality bonding, light learning and reflection on something meaningful and edifying. Some kinds of poetry work like a relaxing piece of music… clearing your head and getting you in the frame of mind that is winding down and tying up loose ends of the day. Then there are the other kinds of poems, ones not only refreshing, but thought-provoking and wondrous. The kind that keep you up in wonder and make you want to do that late Christmas-carrolling nightwalk to see the twinkling colourful lights in nearby streets. Nativity poems, like the ones attached below, have the beauty and awe of Christmas starry nights peppered through them, all while challenging us to do some focused thinking and outward praise about the glory of the Incarnation, God coming to earth as a baby. What better thing to focus on before bedtime than the blessing of Jesus, and what His arrival means for us and humanity to save us from our sins. Jesus, in very nature God, didn’t have to experience human frailty and temptation, die for us and suffer on the cross, and yet He chose to do so in humility and love.
